Little 500 Week Preview

The week before Memorial Day has arrived and that means one thing to pavement sprint car fans everywhere, it is almost time for the Little 500 at Anderson Speedway.

This years Pay Less Little 500 presented by UAW-GM will be the 68th installment of the event which dates back to the first race in 1949 when the track was then known as Sun Valley Speedway.

As of Tuesday there were 36 entries this year with more drivers anticipated to add to that number as the field starts to arrive on Monday and Tuesday. Among the entries is last years champion, Chris Windom. The Canton, IL native will again drive for Goacher Racing as he tries to win back-to-back 500's and his third 500 overall. Missing from the list but also anticipated to run is the 2013 and 2014 race winner Jacob Wilson driving for Wilson Brothers Racing. Wilson finished 4th in the race in 2015.

Unfortunately, one driver missing from this years race will be the late Tony Elliott who was killed in a small plane crash in October with three others in South Carolina. The Warsaw, IN native had started in 22 Little 500's including every race since 1998. Elliott had led over 1,000 laps and tallied four podium finishes. He had also taken one pole for the event, that coming in 2009.

The week will kick off on Tuesday with the first practice session followed by a second on Wednesday and a third on Thursday morning. Qualifying for the pole will take place on Thursday afternoon. Friday morning will feature yet another practice session before the remainder of the field is set that afternoon. A complete time table as well as prices for all events can be found in our Guide to the Little 500.

Saturday will feature a number of events leading up to that evenings 68th Annual Pay Less Little 500 presented by UAW-GM including the Little 500 Hall of Fame induction as well as chances for fans to meet their favorite drivers during an autograph session.

Also worth taking note of is Anderson's Little 500 Festival. A link to a poster containing information about all events taking place for the festival can be found here.

Concerning safety during the week, the Anderson Police Department will be taking part in Operation Pull Over so please plan accordingly and have a designated driver lined up to make it home safely following any event at the track.
