Opinion: The Sprint Week Schedule Affair

For months now, the rumor mill has been running non-stop concerning the "TBA" that filled the opening night of the Indiana Sprint Week schedule. Today we finally got an answer as to where that race would be: Plymouth Speedway. Doesn't really take your breath away does it?

For me, this one came out of nowhere. It's been 178 days since the original USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car schedule was announced and this is what we were waiting for?

Many had speculated that a temporary dirt track constructed at the greatest racing facility in the world, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, would be the site of the opening event but clearly that deal never came to fruition. There were mysterious T-shirts with the "The Dirt Track at IMS" listed on the schedule. I've talked to numerous individuals who said that the negotiations between USAC and IMS were ongoing and it was just a matter of time, and then today happened.

I am not going to point fingers as to where the blame lies in that one. A race at IMS would have drawn an amazing amount of attention to the greatest form of racing in the world, it just did not work out and I'm not bothered by it. One thing that does concern me is how long this all has taken to develop. We're just 46 days away from the opening night of Indiana Sprint Week and until a few hours ago, nobody knew where it would be. That is a very serious issue for the best fans in the world.

Take for instance, Global Speedway Tours, a tour group based out of Australia. Aussies pay thousands of dollars to come over to the United States to watch racing. Their first race upon arriving in the United States is the first round of Indiana Sprint Week. As of this morning the group still had no idea where they were going. What about the loyal fans from right here in the states? Fans take time off of work and make the trek to Indiana from places like Pennsylvania or California to come see the best week of non-wing sprint car racing in the world. It's hard for fans to book hotels when they don't know where they're going. A fan from Arkansas voiced the same concerns to me during Indiana Midget Week.

Then we have Gas City. Here is a track with a new promoter who has brought new life to the facility. I admit, I have not been there this season. That's exactly why I'm headed there this Friday because I have heard nothing but good things from drivers, owners and fans. The promoter and his staff have been very active engaging the public through social media, television and radio trying to build a following and the car counts and crowds have indicated they're doing a good job in reviving a track that has laid mostly silent for the last few years.

Gas City has hosted Sprint Week for over a decade and a half and has put on some tremendous shows. Levi Jones and Bryan Clauson had an epic battle in 2012. In 2016, Tyler Courtney spun on lap one of the feature and was forced to tag the tail. He then passed every single car to win. The track has enough room in the pits, plenty of parking/camping space and has revamped it's facilities. Not to mention it's less than 30 miles from Kokomo which makes it easy for teams to get to Kokomo Speedway for round two on Saturday.

One excuse I have read over and over online is when the original schedule was made, the fate of Gas City was still in the air. That was certainly not the case because they (USAC) had no issue giving Gas City an Indiana Midget Week date which was rained out unfortunately.

Robert Ballou voiced his opinion on Monday afternoon. "USAC let the last promoter have it (an ISW date) and they didn't even run a weekly program, have a guy now trying to make a track stay alive and strip him of it". Again, I'm not the man in charge of USAC but it's clear that a majority of the fans and drivers out there were in favor of Gas City hosting the first round if other possibilities did not work out.

At the end of the day we arrived at Plymouth Speedway. Plymouth made the transition from pavement to dirt a handful of years ago. Slowly they've gotten a little better from the Open Wheel Wednesday events in which the pavement came up through the dirt or not being finished prior to midnight because drivers were too busy shooting archery for their starting positions. I will not fault a track for trying. But was this really the best we could do?

Gas City, Brownstown, Montpelier could all be viable options. Yes, Gas City's stands aren't the most comfortable. Yes, Brownstown is a drive from Kokomo. Yes, Montpelier would have a tough time parking and seating that many fans. But each of these tracks could provide good racing. Instead, we got the one with the sub-par surface but has really nice stands. We got the one that as of the time I posted this article, has not even posted they're hosting the race on their website. The last time they tweeted something was in June of 2017. That's all I'll say on the matter.

At the end of the day I'm just a dedicated fan and part time crew member. I'm not Kevin Miller, I don't make the big decisions. I am however thankful I have the luxury of being able to go wherever I want every weekend and take in some sprint car racing. But this whole ordeal has been odd and we, as a community, are better than this.

Indiana Sprint Week: Lincoln Park Speedway Preview (7/13)

Thursday, July 13 / Lincoln Park Speedway

After being rained out last night in Terre Haute we will be headed to downtown Putnamville for the next round of Indiana Sprint Week.

Last year we were not quite sure if we would get to see any racing at LPS after the same storm that rained out Terre Haute the night prior flooded the track in Putnamville. However, the crew at LPS worked overnight and all day leading up to the event to get cars on the track.

The evening ended with Brady Short driving from 11th place to take the victory. Chase Stockon and Chad Boespflug joined Short on the podium.

Brady Short has 5 career Indiana Sprint Week victories.

In years past Brady Bacon (2015), Robert Ballou (2014), Bryan Clauson (2013), Dave Darland (2012) have picked up Indiana Sprint Week victories in Putnamville.

Indiana Sprint Week: Terre Haute Preview (7/12)

Wednesday, July 12 / Terre Haute Action Track

After a day off to rest and make repairs Indiana Sprint Week resumes in Terre Haute on the famed 1/2 mile tonight, the largest track drivers will encounter during the seven race series.

Mother Nature has not been kind to the Action Track in 2017. The Tony Hulman Classic during the USAC "Week of Indy" was rained out and rescheduled but was once again rained out on June 23. Fans will hope for better weather next Wednesday for the Don Smith Classic.

Chase Stockon won the ISW finale in Terre Haute in 2016.

In 2016 the Indiana Sprint Week event also had to be postponed because of rain. The Wednesday event was moved to Sunday and it was Indiana's own Chase Stockon taking home the victory.

Stockon was followed by Robert Ballou, Tyler Courtney and 2016 Indiana Sprint Week champion Brady Bacon. Aaron Farney rounded out the top five. Farney picked up his first USAC AMSOIL sprint car win at Terre Haute in 2015.

UMP modifieds are also slated to be in action on Wednesday.

2017 Indiana Sprint Week Preview (Part 1)

Friday, July 7 / Gas City I-69 Speedway

We kick off Indiana Sprint Week on Friday night when the United States Auto Club AMSOIL National Sprint Cars visit Gas City I-69 Speedway.

The 1/4 mile track located in the town of Gas City has been the site of some fantastic Indiana Sprint Week openers in recent years such as the duel between Levi Jones and eventual race winner Bryan Clauson in 2012 or last year's race in which Tyler Courtney passed 23 cars on his way to victory.

Tyler Courtney won the ISW opener at Gas City in 2016.
PC: Braden Rouse Photography

The Topp Motorsports driver spun on the opening lap of the feature from the 16th position in 2016, relegating him to the tail of the field. However, Courtney would not be denied and charged to the front and eventually got past Bryan Clauson inside of 10 laps to go to win his first ever USAC sprint car feature. Behind Courtney, Clauson would hang on for second while Chris Windom would round out the podium. In all, 47 cars took part in night #1 of Indiana Sprint Week last season.

In recent years, Chase Stockon (2015), Jon Stanbrough (2014 & 2013) and Dave Darland (2011) have also collected wins at the track during Indiana Sprint Week.

A number of other drivers that are consistently threats to win at Gas City are Scotty Weir, Shane Cottle and Thomas Meseraull. All of which have won numerous races at the track and have all earned track championships in the past.

Accompanying the USAC sprint cars on Friday night will be UMP modifieds.

Saturday, July 8 / Kokomo Speedway

Night #2 of the 2017 edition of Indiana Sprint Week takes us 30 miles west of Gas City to Kokomo Speedway. The track, known as Indiana's Baddest Bullring, rarely disappoints when sprint cars are in town.

In 2016, Kyle Cummins picked up his first ever USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car victory at Kokomo during Sprint Week. Cummins held off the 2015 USAC sprint car champion Robert Ballou by a matter of feet to collect the win and in the process became the second driver to collect his first USAC win in as many nights.

Dave Darland has won a USAC national event feature in 24 consecutive seasons but has yet to register a USAC win in 2017. The USAC sprint car all time wins leader will try to change that in Kokomo on Saturday where he has won more than any other driver in the history of the famed facility.

Darland's most recent Indiana Sprint Week win at Kokomo came in dramatic form in 2014 when he slid under Justin Grant in the final two turns and beat the Ione, California native in a drag race to the line after the two had raced each other hard in the closing laps.

Cullman, Alabama's Kevin Thomas Jr. is the defending track champion at Kokomo Speedway and figures to be a contender for the win as well on Saturday evening. "KTJ" has already collected two wins at Kokomo this season after having won a handful of races in Kokomo last year including the Sprint Car Smackdown title.

The UMRA TQs will also be in action on Saturday night alongside the sprint cars.

Sunday, July 9 / Lawrenceburg Speedway

Sunday will take USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Cars to Lawrenceburg Speedway in southeastern Indiana for round #3 of Indiana Sprint Week before we get a few days off to recharge for the remaining four events.

Last year it was the late Bryan Clauson dominating the field en route to his 41st and final USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car win. Clauson held off challenges from Tyler Courtney and New Mexico's Josh Hodges on the way to the victory.

Earlier this year it was Chris Windom picking up the victory at Lawrenceburg Speedway when the series visited the track in April. The Canton, Illinois native was followed by Chad Boespflug and Justin Grant.

Other recent Indiana Sprint Week winners at Lawrenceburg include Brady Bacon (2015), Kevin Thomas Jr. (2013), Justin Grant (2012) and Robert Ballou in 2011.

The Lawrenceburg Speedway Budweiser UMP modifieds will serve as the support class for the evening.

MSCS Mid-Season Recap

The Midwest Sprint Car Series event scheduled for this Saturday at Brownstown Speedway marks the halfway point for the 2017 MSCS season so we are taking a look back at what has happened so far.

Carson Short is your current series points leader entering the Sprint Spectacular on Saturday. Short has picked up one series win this season which came on May 13 at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt. The Marion, Illinois native has finished in the top ten in every event thus far and finished in the top five in all but one event.

Defending series champion Brady Short sits 2nd in points
PC: Braden Rouse Photography
Brady Short trails Carson Short in the points standings by just 13 points. Like the points leader, Brady Short's consistency has put him in the position he is in. Short has finished in the top five in each event with an average finishing position of third. If he can maintain that pace there is a good chance that he will pick up his third consecutive MSCS championship at season's end.

Brandon Morin and Kyle Cummins are also still in the hunt for the 2017 MSCS championship as they sit third and fourth in the standings respectively. Morin has picked up three top ten finishes including a third place finish at Tri-State Speedway on May 13. Meanwhile, Cummins has struggled at times this season but the four time series champ has still managed to rack up a pair of top five finishes and only sits 76 points behind Carson Short in the standings.

Chase Stockon has tallied 2 series victories in 2017
PC: Braden Rouse Photography
Chase Stockon has won the last two series events, both in Haubstadt. Other feature winners include AJ Hopkins, Chris Windom and Thomas Meseraull. None of which are running the full series schedule in 2017.

Saturday will be the ninth scheduled event of the season for the MSCS. The series has completed six of the scheduled events so far in 2017 with events in Terre Haute and Montpelier being rained out in late April and early May.

After Saturday the series will move into the second half of its season which will include two visits to Lincoln Park Speedway, five to Tri-State Speedway and a trip to Shadyhill Speedway in the northern part of the state.
