Opinion: Accountability

A piece by Ryan Kent Jr. who will be contributing to the blog during the upcoming season from time to time.

In a time of lackluster upbringings and some subpar society standards, holding people accountable for what they do is at an all-time low.

Racing should come at no less of an expense. From karting tracks in Michigan to dirt tracks in California and right here in Indiana there seems to be an issue with people being accountable for their actions, on and off the track.

With society today being all about getting participation trophies, having your feelings in a bullet-proof box and being entitled to whatever it may be, I believe we can all agree that dirt track racing has seemed to always have its own way of doing things, this old fashioned, All-American bad ass, rub some dirt on it and suck it up kind of attitude. Change is imminent however and the ever-changing revolution that we deal with today in the world I believe could help improve some things in racing.

Although racing will never be 100% safe, the strides to keep everyone as safe as possible have to keep moving forward. Throughout the course of the PRI show, multiple professional organizations announced plans or proposals to try and make racing safer. Whether it’s putting lights on a car, testing for drugs, creating new safety procedures after a wreck or what the instance may be, I give credit to series, tracks, promoters, drivers and teams who allow new things to be trialed and tested.

The racing community is a very tight-knit group. Everyone has some connection to someone and, in the end, it is one big family. The members of that family care for each other and, in the wake of a tragic incident on the track or off, those members try to find solutions to problems.

During times of change in racing, people have had to adapt and grow. There's far too many people who are lazy while sitting back on their hands and do nothing. On the other hand, there are those who take the initiative to make motions forward in safety and for the betterment of their form of racing.  Then, the sport as a whole gets ridiculed and spit on by those aforementioned folks doing nothing as if it’s something they don’t happen to like or care for.

There is no way to fix a person’s attitude, what they care about, or how they will react to this or that to the news of something new in racing. Times are again starting to change in racing, and people are not adapting and growing as much as they were before.

If it’s lights, drug testing, wings, no wings, formats, purses, track prep, medical information, schedule dates or whatever, some people become frustrated. Remember, people didn’t take those actions to upset anyone. Those who are accountable for the success of a given track or series are taking steps to make racing better and safer for the most important factor of all, the race fans.

As the entire world around us changes day to day with new this or new that, perhaps take a deep breath and look at new innovations in racing. Who really knows when an innovation could end up being one of the best decisions ever made by a track, series, promoter, driver, chassis or manufacturer. Give them a shot!

The Hoffman Racing team announced this morning that Chad Boespflug would be its new driver for the 2017 campaign. The full press release can be seen below.

Loveland, OH (Dec 5, 2016) – The one thing constant in life is change. Coming off a banner year for Hoffman Racing (HAR), winning the Team’s unprecedented 11th USAC National Sprint
Car Series Championship, winning Indiana Sprint Week for 2016, the first ever Little 500win and reaching 100 National USAC Sprint Car wins, major changes are in store for 2017.

Staying the same are the return of our major sponsor, Mean Green Cleaner & Degreaser, associate sponsors Lykins Energy Solutions, XYZ, and the addition of EZR. HAR remainsan Official Military Order of The Purple Heart Race Team.

What is changing? Of the five “core Team members” of HAR, only Richard Hoffman andTim Waechter are remaining. Dan Launderville is moving on to a business opportunity,Rob Hoffman is retiring, after a lifetime of racing, to concentrate on family and his businesscareer in banking. Brady will not be able to run the entire schedule due to other racing conflictsand will concentrate on wing sprint cars.

“The loss of Dan, Rob and Brady necessitated a restructuring of the Team. I want to wish Dan,Brady, and my son, Rob, the best. We had one heck of a Team, as evidenced by results.Without the backing of Mean Green, Lykins, XYZ, Hoosier Tire, and now EZR, it wouldhave been difficult to continue. As it is we are excited to carry on our legacy with Chad. Hewill drive the 69 car. Chad’s career is taking off and with the addition of Davey Jones as thecrew chief, that makes us a threat every night, and for our 12th USAC National Sprint CarChampionship,” said Richard Hoffman, President of Hoffman Racing. The Team willbe headquartered out of Indianapolis, Indiana.

Chad Boespflug commented “I am looking forward to working with Dynamics Inc. HoffmanRacing. With the help of EZR we will be chasing another championship in 2017. It’s a tall featto follow in the footsteps of their accomplishments over the years, but also a huge honor tohelp carry on the Hoffman Racing legacy of excellence and championship. They have truly helpedevolve the sport of racing."

Chad began racing micros in 1998 in his home state of California. He graduated to sprint cars in 2004.He won the SCRA championship in 2005 and made the big move to Indiana in 2007. He became theLawrenceburg track champion in 2011. Chad began his own team with the help of Chuck Eberhardtand Fred Zirzow and ran the entire USAC National Sprint Car schedule. They racked up 6 USACNational wins in 2016.

“Mean Green is America’s #1 heavy duty, all purpose cleaner and degreaser that provides consumerswith the toughest clean at a great value. Independent lab tests prove that Mean Green out cleans otherbrands on the tough grease and grime. It works better because it contains more cleaning ingredients than other brands. Thomas quickly got on track in a 410 non-wing sprint car picking up a win at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville and tallying multiple top 10 finishes over the course of the season. His performance was good enough to win him the title of 2016 ISCN Rookie of the Year.

2016 ISCN Awards - Driver(s) of the Year

Driver(s) of the Year

Kevin Thomas Jr. & Bryan Clauson

There is a ton I could say about either of these two men so I will try to keep it short, sweet and to the point.

Both drivers had outstanding years on the Indiana sprint car circuit while both had shortened years for very different reasons. Kevin Thomas Jr. missed the front half of the year while competing in ARCA while the racing community lost one of its greatest drivers in Clauson in August.

Even so, combined the drivers racked up 20 sprint car wins across the state of Indiana at eight different race tracks. Here is a closer look at what both drivers accomplished this season around the Hoosier State. That's why both have been chosen as the Indiana Sprint Car News Driver of the Year.

MSCS to crown champion on Saturday

The stage is set for the season finale at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt on Saturday night when it will host the final race of the 2016 Midwest Sprint Car Series season with the feature deciding the 2016 series champion.

Entering the series' final race of the season, Brady Short leads the championship standings by 28 points over Tyler Hewitt while Brandon Morin sits 32 points back of Short.

Short, the defending MSCS champion as well as the 2011 series champ, has not collected a win in MSCS action this season but has climbed his way to the top of the standings behind a steady diet of consistent finishes.

However, all three drivers could face stiff competition on Saturday night from other drivers. Kyle Cummins has the hot hand at TSS this year where he owns three wins, the latest coming in September where he bested the field in a USAC/MSCS co-sanctioned event. Chase Stockon has also collected multiple wins at TSS this year, both in MSCS sanctioned races. Carson Short, who sits fourth in the MSCS standings, also has a win in Haubstadt in 2016 which he picked up during Indiana Sprint Week in July.

We'll have more information about the race tomorrow in our Weekend Preview.

Tony Stewart

Again I'm going to stray from the normal Indiana sprint car talk but bear with me.

With the Indiana sprint car season coming to a close that also signals the end of the season for many other forms of racing. Formula 1 only has a handful of races left, NASCAR has started the "Chase" and our friend JR Todd only has a few more chances to collect another Wally.

However, I want to focus on NASCAR and one driver in particular: Tony Stewart. Tonight I got home from an evening out with my lady friend and was making my rounds on social media. I saw that Stewart had been eliminated from the "Chase" along with another of my favorites, Kyle Larson. I think most of us are use to seeing negative remarks about Smoke in the comment section these days, I wrote a piece about that back in January. But for so many fans to be disrespectful and hateful to a driver and more importantly a person that has given so much to racing makes me mad.

In terms of racing I'm a youngster. Tony Stewart has been in NASCAR for my entire adult life, I missed the majority of his open wheel years, or at least I was too young to comprehend what he was really doing at the time. However, in the time I've been able able to actually watch and know what's going on I've seen Stewart do some incredible things. But lets start at the beginning because that tells a lot of the story.

Tony Stewart was not born into some well-to-do household like many of his NASCAR counterparts. Tony had to race his way through the ranks with, for the most part, the help of some good people along along the way. Stewart won karting and TQ titles before he moved up to bigger and better things.

He was the USAC Midget National Champion in 1994 and would follow that up with the coveted USAC Triple Crown in 1995, a feat accomplished by only 5 other drivers in USAC's history (Pancho Carter, Dave Darland, Jerry Coons Jr, JJ Yeley & Tracy Hines). More impressively, he did it all in the same season. This feat has only been repeated one other time when JJ Yeley did it in 2003, with the help of Stewart as a car owner.

Beyond that Stewart went on to become a winner in CART and then the Indy Racing League where he won a championship in 1997 before moving over to NASCAR. He won Rookie of the Year in his freshman year and then won his first title in 2002 for Joe Gibbs Racing, following that up with another title in 2005. He won another championship in 2011 after they changed to that gimmick "Chase" format and he did it with a team he co-owned. Kevin Harvick won another championship for him a few years back as well. During that time he also won an IROC championship. But all of that is just on pavement.

Can we really forget that Tony Stewart has won two Chili Bowl National titles (2002 & 2007), a Turkey Night Grand Prix (2000) and multiple World of Outlaws features? The list goes on and on and were not even going to try to touch the local level. Oh yeah, he did show up at the Fort Wayne Rumble a few times over the years. He has 9 feature wins there against the likes of Dave Darland or the late Tony Elliott.

Off the track, Tony Stewart stepped in when the legendary Earl Baltes was getting up there in age and bought Eldora Speedway off of him. The track conditions may not always be the best but I can tell you that the facilities there are top notch and Smoke has tried to do everything he can when it comes to promotion. There are USAC/WoO doubleheaders, the 4-Crown Nationals have now added the All Star sprint cars and oh yeah, there is a damn NASCAR race at the track now. Who would have thought that 10 years ago? That's due to Tony Stewart. Lets not forget that for a time he brought the Prelude to the Dream to Eldora  which brought in premier drivers from all ranks to run dirt late models for charity. People paid big money to go to those shows and Tony turned around and gave that money away for a good cause.

When the All Star Sprints were struggling, Tony Stewart bought them, now they routinely have better car counts than the World of Outlaws. When a young motocross rider named Eric Saunders crashed and found himself paralyzed, Smoke stepped in and got that kid in a race car. I forgot to point out Stewart has his own dirt team.

Yes, Tony Stewart Racing shut down it's non wing program but not before he helped guys like Josh Wise or JJ Yeley win USAC championships. By the way, they were in the NASCAR race today too. As far as his non-wing program went he also helped out a young guy named Bryan Clauson, he was pretty good I think, along with others such as Levi Jones, Bobby East, and Jay Drake. Championships are always good and that group has plenty of them.

On the winged side Stewart may have been critical of "The King" Steve Kinser at times but when you're flipping the bills I think you're allowed to do that. He supported Kinser in the later years of his epic career when many others were constantly saying he should hang it up along with helping Donny Schatz win his last six World of Outlaws championships if you include this year. He helped Danny "The Dude" Lasoski win one as well as an owner.

I'm not blind and I saw all the drama up in New York in the winged sprint car race a few years back but I was not there, I was not in the car and I can only gauge what happened by the facts laid before me.

On the other hand I can tell you for a fact that Tony Stewart is a wheel-man. He's one of those few talented individuals that can be put behind the wheel of any type of car and can race it and probably win in it. He gives back a ton of his fortune to charity and also has helped grow the local short track circuit whether it's funding a team, buying a track, or funding an entire series.

Tony Stewart may not be your favorite driver and that's okay. But he should get a little bit of respect and not the badmouthing I see on social media. So you're sensitive and you don't like a guy that speaks his mind? Okay, but I better not see you wearing a Thomas Meseraull t-shirt at the track. You don't like a driver that's willing to mix it up with another driver after the race in the pits? I better not ever see you cheering for Robert Ballou then.

Every driver is unique, every driver has their own personality and you may or may not like them. But don't be disrespectful. If you do not like a driver, don't buy their t-shirt or cheer for them during driver introductions. DO NOT trash them on social media or in the stands for everyone to hear. This goes back to helping grow the sport. Be proactive, not destructive.

Tony Stewart, you have my respect, you always have. You're a passionate driver that keeps his foot in the gas. There have been some rough times but your good days far outnumber the bad. You've done more for the sport as a whole from karts to NASCAR than any other driver in the history of the sport could ever hope to do. I personally want to thank you.

Nate

Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series continues to grow

In a day where low car counts and declining crowds are hot topics within the racing community, there is one non-wing sprint car series that is defying the odds.

The Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series, otherwise known as BOSS, has continued to grow steadily since its first season in 2011 when the series only consisted of two events. This year the series scheduled 22 races for its 2016 campaign, a record number for BOSS, at 16 different tracks throughout Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania.

BOSS, which has no registration fees for its competitors, is a driver and owner friendly series. All drivers that compete accumulate points and a number of contingency awards exist for drivers such as Hard Charger, Hard Luck, Perseverance and Lucky Pill Draw Awards among others. BOSS also has an open tire rule which is attractive to some car owners. A free Hoosier tire as well as a free American Racer are provided to the two highest finishers who run each brand of tire on all four corners.

The perks listed above are just some of the reasons why the series has continued to grow, attracting cars from across the region. Through 10 events this year, two others have rained out, the series has averaged just over 34 cars per race. In comparison, that is a higher average than the USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car Series while the Midwest Sprint Car Series, a regional series with a similar number of races on their schedule, has averaged just under 25 cars per event.

There are number of regulars in the Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series including Shawn Westerfeld, Cooper Clouse and Justin Owen. However, the series also attracts drivers that many Hoosiers are familiar with seeing on a weekly basis including: Thomas Meseraull, Shane Cottle, Brady Bacon, Landon Simon and Dakota Jackson.

With those names in the mix the series is competitive at any track it competes at. In the 10 races this year there have been seven different winners including: Kody Swanson, Cooper Clouse, Steve Irwin, Shawn Westerfeld, Justin Owen, Dustin Smith and Luke Hall.

If you have not seen the Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series in action, this weekend the series will be serving up two opportunities inside the Hoosier State. On Friday night, for the first time in BOSS history, they will be at Twin Cities Raceway Park in North Vernon. The series will then travel to Lawrenceburg Speedway on Saturday night for the Jason Soudrette Memorial.

We'll have more information about those two events later this week in the weekend preview.

For more information about the Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series visit their website.

2016 Indiana Sprint Week Recap

The 2016 version of Indiana Sprint Week is now in the books and with it we have gained a first time champion along with four new USAC feature winners.

The week began at Gas City I-69 Speedway on July 8. After spinning on the first lap of the 30 lap feature not many would have thought it would only take "Sunshine" a little over 20 laps to pass all 23 competitors but that's exactly what happened.

Courtney rolled the bottom as the top went away and was able to get by two-time USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car champion Bryan Clauson in route to his first series victory. Courtney was followed by Clauson and 2011 Indiana Sprint Week champion, Chris Windom.

Sprint Week continued on July 9 at Kokomo Speedway. For the second straight night it was a new winner in victory lane as Princeton, Indiana's Kyle Cummins picked up the win. Cummins was able to hold off last years Indiana Sprint Week champion Robert Ballou in a photo finish at the line after running the bottom nearly perfect for the final 8 laps. Kevin Thomas Jr. finished third.

Rounding out the first half of Indiana Sprint Week cars next appeared in Lawrenceburg where Bryan Clauson led all but the first five laps of the feature to pick up his seventh USAC sprint car feature victory of 2016. Tyler Courtney and Chris Windom rounded out the podium.

Indiana Sprint Week was scheduled to resume in Terre Haute on July 13 but rain forced drivers and fans to wait until the following night at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville.

This time it was Brady Short picking up his 7th Indiana sprint car win of the season on a track, that just 24 hours earlier, had been flooded. Short picked off 10 cars in the first 10 laps and was able to get around Dave Darland to lead lap 12 and would never relinquish the position. Chase Stockon was second followed by Chad Boespflug in third.

Last Friday night took the series to Bloomington Speedway where we were once again treated to a first time USAC winner when Brent Beauchamp out-dueled USAC's all-time winningest sprint car driver in Dave Darland. The pair traded blows for much of the feature and officially there were seven different lead changes between the two until Beauchamp pulled away over the final 10 laps.

Brady Bacon, continuing a string of consistent finishes would come home second in the #69 while Dave Darland finished third.

The week's trend of first time winners continued on Saturday night when Carson Short picked up the victory at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt.

Short led all 30 laps en route to the victory while Kokomo winner Kyle Cummins finished second followed by Chase Stockon. The finish set up a dramatic climax to Indiana Sprint Week with Brady Bacon leading defending USAC sprint car champion Robert Ballou in the Indiana Sprint Week standings by just 10 points.

As usual, the legendary Action Track at Terre Haute did not disappoint on Sunday in the Indiana Sprint Week finale. Chase Stockon became the seventh different winner in the seven race series after holding off numerous challenges by Robert Ballou. Bryan Clauson had been charging hard before losing a right rear and being forced to restart from the tail and finishing with a top ten.

In the process Brady Bacon won the Indiana Sprint Week title for the first time in his career behind consistent runs over the seven race series. Bacon did not score a win but tallied multiple top fives and finished outside the top ten only once when he finished 11th at Putnamville.

Final Indiana Sprint Week standings

1. Brady Bacon
2. Robert Ballou (-9)
3. Tyler Courtney (-58)

ISCN Mid-season recap

It is now July and with Indiana Sprint Week just days away we are now roughly halfway through the Indiana sprint car schedule for 2016. Here is a quick look at what has transpired so far this season.

The 2016 campaign kicked off way back in March with the No Way Out 40 at Brownstown Speedway. Bryan Clauson picked up the win that night and set the pace for what has been a dominating Indiana sprint car season for the Noblesville native. Clauson, who is trying to run 200 races this year in a plethora of cars, has tallied seven wins around the state in a non-wing 410 sprint car.

The most impressive stretch for "BC" came during Indiana Midget Week in which he picked up 4 sprint car victories in five races as well as winning the Indiana Midget Week title. Clauson has also ran a multitude of winged sprint cars events this year as well as taking part in the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 in which he finished 23rd.

Another driver that has dominated much of the competition this season is Kevin Thomas Jr. The Cullman, Alabama native began his 2016 season running for Cunningham Motorsports in ARCA. In the season opening event at Daytona, Thomas Jr. was able to navigate his car to a 7th place finish, even after he was caught up in an early race accident not of his doing that eliminated multiple cars from the race and damaged his own.

However, sponsorship woes forced him from the car after only two races. Returning to the Indiana sprint car scene and wheeling the 4J Motorsports sprint car, Thomas Jr. has ripped off six wins across the state including one in USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car action at Brownstown in May. "KTJ" was also the only driver that managed to upend Bryan Clauson as he went on a rampage during Indiana Midget Week. Thomas Jr currently leads the points standings at Kokomo Speedway by seven points over a second place Jerry Coons Jr.

Brady Short, to little surprise, also has a number of wins in 2016. The 2015 Bloomington Speedway track champion has picked up four victories at that track this year and currently sits atop the track standings. Short won the Amati Classic at Paragon Speedway on June 18 and also at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville in May.

In terms of track championship races, Indiana sprint car fans will be treated to a number of battles throughout the remainder of the season.

At Lawrenceburg Speedway, Jarett Andretti leads the standings by just 10 points over 2014 track champion Shawn Westerfeld. Westerfeld, who is running for points in the Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series (BOSS), has taken the checkers three times at the track in 2016 and will need to repeat that feat multiple times to stay close in the standings as the BOSS series will, from time to time, pull him away from his usual duties in Lawrenceburg on Saturday nights.

There is tight two-driver battle going on this season at Bloomington Speedway. Brady Short currently sits atop the standings behind four wins on the red clay. However, Short's lead is only by four points over Jeff Bland Jr. who has finished up front consistently all season although he has yet to win a race in Bloomington this summer.

Paragon Speedway has also provided for a close points battle this season. Jake Scott, the defending track champion, started 2016 strong ripping off two victories in the first two events at Paragon. However, Scott had hit a dry spot until winning his third race of the season last Saturday night helping him gain ground in the standings. Scott currently sit 37 points back of leader Josh Cunningham. Andrew Prather, who has collected a win this year, sits in second place only three points behind Cunningham.

As mentioned earlier, Kevin Thomas Jr. has driven a dominant car in many of the races he has entered this season and that kind of driving has him sitting atop the standings at Kokomo Speedway. Thomas Jr. currently leads veteran driver Jerry Coons Jr. by seven points while Illinois driver Chris Windom sits just 12 points back in third place.

Shane Cockrum has had a consistent season at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville. Cockrum has tallied two victories at LPS this year and holds a commanding lead in the points. The nearest competitor being Kevin Thomas Jr. who is 76 points behind.

On the USAC side of life, Brady Bacon leads the championship standings by 104 points over Thomas Meseraull and 148 points ahead of Chase Stockon. Robert Ballou, the defending USAC sprint car champion, enters Indiana Sprint Week with the hot hand having won two of the last three series events and has won four events total in 2016.

Following the seven rounds of Indiana Sprint Week, the USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Cars are scheduled to make multiple other appearances in the Hoosier State before heading west to conclude their 2016 campaign.

In the Midwest Sprint Car Series (MSCS) the field is currently chasing Brandon Morin. Morin leads second place Brady Short by 10 points while Carson Short sits 15 points back in third. There are currently seven races remaining on the MSCS schedule, all in Indiana.

There has been plenty of winged sprint car action around the state this year as well.

Brad Sweet, David Gravel, Shane Stewart and Donny Schatz have all picked up victories this year with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series in Indiana. Schatz currently leads the points standings for the series by 72 over Brad Sweet. Unfortunately the series has no other dates scheduled in Indiana for the remainder of the season.

The Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions have yet to make an appearance in Indiana this season but that will be remedied later this month when the series will visit Kokomo Speedway for the two day Indiana Dirt Classic. The Tony Stewart owned series will also pay a visit to Brownstown Speedway in August.

The Neal Tire Midwest Open Wheel Association (MOWA) sprint cars have also made multiple trips into Indiana this season. Jerrod Hull won on both occasions, once at Bloomington and the other victory coming at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt. Hull also leads the series standings.

Current series points leaders

USAC - Brady Bacon
MSCS - Brandon Morin
WoO - Donny Schatz
ASCoC - Chad Kemenah
ASCS - Sam Hafertepe Jr.
GLSS - Dustin Daggett
MOWA - Jerrod Hull

Wins leaders (in Indiana only)

7 - Bryan Clauson
